Midsomer Murders star pays tribute to 'inspirational' Neil Dudgeon as series ends

Midsomer Murders star calls Neil Dudgeon an 'inspiration'

Midsomer Murders stars Neil Dudgeon and Nick Hendrix appeared on the This Morning sofa to chat about the latest series which concluded earlier this week.

When asked what it was like to work with his co-star, Nick said: "Neil is an inspiration, he is a mentor figure really, a father figure. I have learned so much from him both from acting and in life."

Neil seemed to blush as Alison Hammond chipped in: "I hear he is doing his own stunts?"

"He does all kinds of stunts, but he has got a dodgy knee," Nick pointed out. "As long as his knee is alright and his elbow..."

"I can't tell you who we were chasing after," Neil admitted before adding: "There was a bit of a chase scene and they said, 'Well Nick is going to chase him all over Berkshire, and Neil you have just got to run around the table'.

"It was a brisk walk and we did it three of four times and it all went fine and then the night I got home and went, 'Oh my knee'."

In another recent interview, Neil, who plays DCI John Barnaby, confessed that stepping into the shoes of John Nettles in the ITV series was a "hard" task. He took over the role from John in the 14th series and recently spoke about the fear of being "cancelled" after his first series.

"It was hard at the beginning because John [Nettles] had done it for 14 years," he revealed to Radio Times magazine.

"If they'd cancelled me after one series, that would have been embarrassing! It gets easier, but I try to keep it fresh. Even if I've gone through the script 50 times, I'll look at it again and have another thought. It's still extremely pleasant and I'm extremely grateful."

On Tuesday, the latest series came to an end, however, not all viewers were thrilled with the new episodes, with many expressing their opinions on social media.

Midsomer Murders enthusiasts spotted an eyebrow-raising discrepancy in the timelines between seasons 22 and 23, especially regarding the unexpected growth spurt of DCI Barnaby's daughter Betty, portrayed by Isabel Shaw.

A perplexed viewer remarked: "If ever I needed proof that there's always such a gap between episodes of #MidsomerMurders, it's seeing how Barnaby's daughter has gone from literal toddler to schoolgirl in a matter of no episodes at all."

"Betty has grown up so fast," observed a second fan, while another quipped: "Betty must be the fastest-growing child in human history."

Meanwhile, some followers express their dissatisfaction with the show's repetitive structure, urging producers to inject fresh excitement into the long-running series.

Midsomer Murders is available to watch on the ITV Hub.
