Police arrest 44 in anti-illegal workers operation

Police on Wednesday said they had arrested 44 people in an operation targeting illegal workers and the use of e-bikes for delivery. This includes 36 non-Chinese who hold temporary identification documents which bar them from working. Seven account holders were also arrested for providing their accounts to the illegal workers, so that they could take orders or deliver takeaway. "We also found that the arrested account holders come from the same place as the deliverymen, or are their friends, and that they had lent out their accounts," said Senior Inspector Lam Tsz-lin. Police revealed that delivery platforms had agreed to terminate riders' accounts if workers were found to have committed illegal acts, including the use of e-bikes or seriously breaching traffic regulations. Authorities also reached out to building management offices to remind security guards to register the couriers' information. They said security staff should contact police immediately if the deliverymen do not have ID cards.
