Outlander fans left 'blubbering' over Claire Fraser's heartbreaking departure

Outlander’s Catriona Balfe discusses parenting during filming

Warning - this article contains major spoilers for Outlander season 7.

Outlander fans were left inconsolable by Claire Fraser’s (played by Caitriona Balfe) impossible decision in the historical Starz drama.

Back in the first season, Claire is whisked back to 18th Century Scotland where she encounters rugged Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

They quickly fall for each other after marrying to protect Claire from Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), the vicious ancestor of her 20th Century husband, Frank (also Menzies).

Despite realising their feelings for one another, Jamie decides it’s best for Claire to return to her own timeline and takes her back to the mysterious supernatural stones at Craigh Na Dun.

However, Claire finds it impossible to turn her back on her new life in the past, tearing herself away from the stones and deciding to stay with Jamie.

If fans weren’t hooked on the epic romantic saga before that pivotal moment in the inaugural season, there was certainly no turning back once Claire made the choice to abandon her first husband.

One newcomer to the series shared on the Netflix Bangers Facebook group: “I just started watching it too!

“Absolutely love it, the history, the acting…” Although they admitted: “It took me a while to get into it which is probably why I didn’t watch it previously but now I’m hooked and up to season 2.”

The turning point for this fan may have been Claire turning her back on her chance to return home, as they admitted: “I’ve cried like 3 times in season 1 and that hardly ever happens.

“When she left the stones and chose him and he had tears in his eyes, I WAS BLUBBERING.”

Outlander’s emotional stakes have not let up since and, if anything, each season of the show so far has been even more devastating than the last.

At the end of season seven, part one, Claire and Jamie’s daughter Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) is left in the 1980s while her husband Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) returns to the past to track down their kidnapped son Jemmy (Blake Johnston Miller).

Fans have been left on the edge of their seats, and there are still several months to go before the saga continues.

Thankfully, Outlander has also been renewed for an eighth and final season, which is expected to drop next year.

Plus, a prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, has just wrapped up filming and will expand the gripping story even further.

Outlander season 7, part 2 premieres Friday, November 22 on Starz.
