House of the Dragon fans argue over wild Alys Rivers theory as Larys' tragic past unveiled

House of the Dragon Season 2 official trailer

*WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6.*

The sixth episode of House of the Dragon’s second season has caused fans to speculate about Alys Rivers’ (Gayle Rankin) various supposed machinations. Season 2, episode 6 saw Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) have a refreshingly candid chat with bed-bound Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), as he discussed the challenges of living with a disability.

It comes after Aegon was brutally betrayed by his brother Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), with the HBO show later revealing he had survived the terrible fall on his loyal dragon Sunfyre. However, Aegon’s life will be forever changed, as he has sustained major burns and broken bones.

Following Aegon’s reckless decision to join the fray at the battle of Rook’s Rest after being goaded by his mother Alicent Hightower’s (Olivia Cooke) harsh words, he is attacked by Aemond on his dragon. Back at the Red Keep, most people are not aware of what really happened at Rook’s Rest, with Aemond making it clear to his frail brother that revealing the truth would lead to serious consequences for him.

One unlikely visitor to come to Aegon’s bedside is none other than the slippery Lord Larys, who has just been dismissed as a candidate for Hand of the King by Aemond. In the strangely heartfelt interaction, Larys opens up about the harsh realities of being “a cripple” in the world of Game of Thrones.

He tells Aegon: “You’ve already written yourself into legend. You survived dragon fire. But I’m afraid you will never be whole. Orwyle has exhausted his abilities.

“He’s bound your leg, but you will never run again. Your mind is all that remains to you, and I do not say that gladly.

Speaking about the day he was born, Larys continues: “I came screaming into the world in the bowels of one of Harren’s great towers.

“My lungs were strong but my foot was so twisted that my father named it sorcery, accusing a member of our household of casting maligned spells.

“People will pity you - either behind your back or in your presence - and they will stare at you or turn away.

“And they will underestimate you, and this will be your advantage,” he adds. “Your brother rules in your place now which means your life is in danger, but I think you know that.”

“Help me,” Aegon pleads, before the camera cuts back to Larys, who looks on thoughtfully.

Taking to Reddit, fans shared their reaction to the scene, with some suggesting Harren’s “spellcaster” could be none other than sinister but gifted healer Alys.

Repeating the quote about Larys’ foot beside a picture of Alys, one viewer insisted: “It was her!”

“This was my first thought too lol,” one added, as a third agreed: “A likely thing for her to do.”

“It was Alys all along!” a fourth person penned, as one more theorised: “Very possible and might have also shifted the blame towards a loyal maester/healer to create "a vacancy" for herself.” (sic)

However, other fans felt those sharing the theories were missing the point of Larys’ story, with one arguing: “Larys is just saying it’s f***ed up that his dad saw a disabled child and assumed it had to be witchcraft and not just something that happens to people.

“Really highlighting his dad’s (and the realm’s) view on disabilities - that they are either a punishment for sin or the result of dark magic. Tyrion goes through the same being a dwarf.” (sic)

While another penned: “Nah. Lyonel was just looking for someone to blame.” (sic)

A third agreed: “This is where I landed — it seemed to me he was talking about how horrible the world is to people with disabilities and how that has impacted him from birth. There was no indication that someone put an actual curse on him…” (sic)

A final fan chimed in: “I really don't think so. I thought the implication from that conversation was that the accused household member was probably fired or even killed. It would be weird to accuse someone of something like that and then just let them continue working for you for decades.

“Also if she is in fact way older than she appears, she probably wouldn't want to stick around the same family for decades. If she is immortal (or just ages slowly) that's not something she'd want widely known.” (sic)

House of the Dragon season 2 is set to air in the UK on Mondays at 2am BST (British Summer Time) on Sky Atlantic and NOW. The same episode will also be broadcast again on Monday at 9pm.
