The cast and crew of All Creatures Great and Small were faced with a significant issue while filming the Channel 5 show's Christmas special.

Peter Wright and Shona Searson from The Yorkshire Vet had a behind-the-scenes look as last year's festive episode was filmed, but the weather didn't cooperate for the team.

Shona and Peter had front row seats to the action, with Shona expressing her excitement about the actors' arrival. Peter responded: "Yes, in their winter coats" laughing as the bright sun shone down from a clear sky.

As the crew worked in the sweltering heat, the voiceover noted: "The summer sun is continuing to present challenges for the director of photography, Ian, on the Christmas set."

Ian commented: "We've got an issue with the amount of frosting. Most of our dusting in blowing away in the nice summer breeze that we've got."

Despite the filming hiccup, the episode aired on December 21 last year. This follows Nicholas Ralph's announcement that filming for the fifth season has concluded, reports the Mirror.

The actor, who plays James Herriot in the popular Channel 5 drama, shared the news on his Instagram story. He posted a group selfie featuring co-stars Rachel Shenton, Samuel West, Anna Madeley, and Callum Woodhouse at a celebratory meal, writing: "S5 wrapped."

The much-anticipated series, set to grace our screens this autumn, will delight fans with six episodes and a heartwarming festive special. Channel 5 has yet to spill all the details but promises that the upcoming season will continue to "bring the stories of James Herriot to life as we return to Darrowby to rejoin our unconventional much loved Skeldale Family and the colourful ensemble of farmers, animals and townsfolk living in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1940s".

Eager audiences can also look forward to the "unexpected return later in the series" of the beloved Tristan Farnon. Callum, who brings Tristan to life, had previously left Darrowby in the show's third season for a stint in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.

Of course, Nicholas is set to charm us again as James, alongside Rachel as Helen, Samuel as Siegfried, and Anna as the endearing Mrs Hall.

Rounding out the stellar cast are James Anthony-Rose stepping into the shoes of student vet Richard Carmody and Patricia Hodge portraying the eccentric widow Mrs Pumphrey. While the narrative takes inspiration from James Herriot's treasured books, the actors have expressed their own aspirations for the fifth season in a candid interview.

All Creatures Great and Small season 5 will likely air on Channel 5 in the autumn of 2024, with it reaching the US on PBS MASTERPIECE in early 2025
