Loose Women announces Gareth Southgate resignation

Loose Women presenter Charlene White abruptly pasued the latest show to share some breaking news.

The 44-year-old broadcaster was present on Tuesday's (July 16) panel alongside Coleen Nolan, Kelle Bryan and special guest Natalie Cassidy when she began the programme with a surprising revelation.

Gareth Southgate, England's manager, has decided to step down from his position, two days post the distressing defeat of the national team against Spain at the Euros finale.

In a substantive statement issued though the official England account on X, Southgate confessed, "As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all."

He continued, "But it's time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday's final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager." As tributes for Southgate begin pouring in, Prince Charles led the way.

Posting a picture of them together, the Royal stated he wanted to express his gratitude not as the president of the Football Association but as an England fan.

The heir apparent to the British throne added in his commemoration: "Thank you for showing humility, compassion, and true leadership under the most intense pressure and scrutiny," before concluding by lauding Southgate as an "all-round class act", reports the Mirror.

Gareth Southgate, who took the reins of the England squad in autumn 2016, has carved his name into the history books by guiding the Three Lions to their first World Cup semi-final since Bobby Robson's era in 1990.

The landmark achievement came during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where England overcame a notorious penalty shootout curse by defeating Colombia 4-3 on spot-kicks, after previously bowing out in penalties in three World Cups.

Under Southgate's stewardship, England also made it to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar and were tantalisingly close to glory at Euro 2020, hosted at Wembley in 2021, but ultimately succumbed to Italy in a heart-wrenching penalty shootout.

Post-Euro 2024 defeat to Spain, Southgate remained tight-lipped about his future with the national team, stating that he had to engage in "conversations with important people behind the scenes".
