Jessica Capshaw has opened up about the "deep sadness" she experienced following a miscarriage.

The Grey's Anatomy star, mother to Luke, 16, Eve, 13, Poppy, 12, and eight-year-old Josephine with her husband Christopher Gavigan, was left stunned after a routine scan revealed no heartbeat for her unborn baby.

On her and Camilla Luddington's iHeartRadio podcast Call It What It Is, she discussed the "horrible" situation.

"I got pregnant and I was so excited and I had never had any issues before getting pregnant," Jessica recalled. "I was very lucky and I'm very grateful."

She continued, revealing the shock at her appointment: "And then all of a sudden, at my 10-week appointment, [I] went in for the ultrasound, was by myself, totally unsuspecting, and there was no heartbeat."

The 47-year-old actress grappled with whether to inform her husband over the phone or in person, describing it as "the most shocking and deeply, deeply sad thing."

Despite the pain and disappointment, Jessica felt "very, very fortunate" to have the support of a "compassionate" doctor and her partner, adding: "And then you know, life carried on, and I had a chance to take care of myself and my body and my relationship and my other children, and it was really incredible."

Earlier in the programme, Jessica and Camilla, who shares sons Hayden, seven, and Lucas, three, with her husband Matthew Alan, responded to a caller seeking advice on whether to have a third child.

Camilla, 40, admitted she "easily" decided to stop at two kids because her "anxiety" wouldn't handle a third, but pointed out to her pal: "You have four, though, so this is a different answer for you."

The Practice actress shared that growing up in a large family made having many children feel "very natural" to her.

She elaborated: "For me, I came from a big family, so I think that it was very natural and I didn't feel overwhelmed.

"And Luke is three years older than Eve, and then Poppy is only 20 months younger than Eve.

"So we went like boom boom. It was Luke, and a break then Eve, and then I got pregnant when Eve was 10 months old."

However, she emphasised the importance of open communication with one's partner before expanding the family.

She advised: "I think that the answer is that it's a very personal answer.

"[It helps to be] really really in touch and really really honest with yourself and with your partner."
