Gareth Southgate is stepping down as England manager in the wake of Sunday's defeat in the Euro 2024 final, it has been confirmed. The 53-year-old, who managed over 100 games in charge of the national team, has resigned from his role ahead of the next World Cup cycle.

Southgate was only tied down until the end of December, having signed an extension to his previous deal back in 2021. His final game as England boss saw the Three Lions beaten in a second straight Euros final, with Spain leaving it late to snatch a dramatic victory.

The former Middlesbrough head coach remained coy on his England future during the tournament but the FA have since confirmed that he has decided to walk away. His assistant boss Steve Holland will also be stepping down, with the governing body in the process of appointing their replacements.

A statement read: "After 102 games and almost eight years in charge, Gareth Southgate has announced he is to leave his role as manager of the Three Lions."

Mark Bullingham, chief executive of the FA, added: "On behalf of English football, I would like to pay tribute to Gareth Southgate and to Steve Holland for everything they have achieved.

"Over the last eight years they have transformed the England men’s team, delivering unforgettable memories for everyone who loves the Three Lions. We look back at Gareth’s tenure with huge pride.

"His contribution to the English game, including a significant role in player development, and in culture transformation has been unique. However, it is his record of winning tournament games which is most extraordinary.

"The process for appointing Gareth’s successor is now underway and we aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible. Our UEFA Nations League campaign starts in September and we have an interim solution in place if it is needed.

"We know there will be inevitable speculation, but we won’t be commenting further on our process until we appoint."

It remains to be seen who will replace Southgate in the England dugout, with a few standout names already being mentioned as possible candidates. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has been tentatively linked with the Three Lions job for a number of years, while Lee Carsley could be promoted from within.

Graham Potter has been out of work since leaving Chelsea last year and is another potential option to take England forward. Jurgen Klopp would perhaps be the ideal choice but the 57-year-old is currently taking a break from management after leaving Liverpool.
