England captain Harry Kane was one of several Three Lions players slammed by L’Equipe for their dismal showing in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final.

Reaction in England has been mixed, with a sense of pride about the team making it to another final contrasted by a feeling of ‘what if’ after yet more major tournament heartbreak.

But Gareth Southgate’s side can have few complaints after they limped to a sorry loss against the now four-time European champions Spain, who dominated the sheepish Three Lions for the majority of the 90 minutes.

On the continent, England have been blasted for their performance in the final against Spain, no more so than by French outlet L’Equipe, who issued skipper Kane with a 3/10 rating.

Criticising his showing at the tip of the attack, L’Equipe’s assessment read: “Clearly tired, the Munich player made a series of bad choices, missing several passes that annihilated his team's attacks (23rd, 24th, 30th).

"Picking up a deserved yellow card for an avoidable foul on Fabian Ruiz (25th) and being too short on a cross from Foden (60th). The captain was logically replaced in the 61st minute by Watkins.”

Despite winning the joint Golden Boot award, Kane came under fire for his showings in Germany, with some questioning whether the 31-year-old is the right man to lead the line for England going forward.

But he wasn’t alone. L’Equipe also dished out 4/10 ratings for Marc Guehi, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker, who was adjudged to have been at fault for both Spanish goals.

On the right-back’s performance, they said: “The Citizen started better than in his previous outings with England, notably distinguishing himself with a chiselled cross (15th) and an impressive acceleration which allowed his team to recover a well-placed free-kick (45th).

“But he was caught up by his demons afterwards, as he was poorly positioned on the first Spanish goal (47th) and too short to prevent Cucurella's cross (86th).”

Surprisingly though, there were some warm words for manager Southgate, who was praised for his tactical flexibility.

His evaluation read: “While the England coach is often criticised for his immobility, this time he took the risk of changing his tactical organisation (from 3-4-2-1 to 4-2-3-1), starting Luke Shaw (who had not started a match since 18 February) and making changes quite early which proved to be profitable, as Cole Palmer scored 3 minutes after coming on as a substitute. But Spain were simply much stronger than his team.”
