Emotional BBC viewers issue plea after Sue Barker returns to Wimbledon

Wimbledon: Sue Barker returns to Centre Court

BBC viewers were left in tears on Thursday after Sue Barker made a special return to Wimbledon to surprise Andy Murray. Sue was the face of BBC Wimbledon for three decades before her departure in 2022.

Andy is participating in his final Wimbledon, prompting an all-out effort to bid him a fitting farewell. As Andy noticed Sue approaching, he joined the crowd in applauding and greeted her with a smile. "I couldn't miss this," she enthusiastically told the spectators.

The pair then shared a warm embrace and began reminiscing about Andy's numerous Wimbledon matches. They also reflected on his loss to Roger Federer the year prior to his first victory.

Andy said: "It's always really difficult to speak after a loss, particularly after a Grand Slam final and being at Wimbledon. That's the closest I had been and it was obviously difficult. It was quite an important moment in my career."

An emotional Andy was shown a tribute video featuring Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer celebrating his achievements. His mum Judy Murray, wife Kim, and two of their children were there to support him from the crowd.

At one point, Sue had to stop the interview as the cheers from the crowd drowned out their conversation.

"I can't stop them, Andy," the TV icon beamed.

After the heartwarming moment, commentator Clare Balding also shared her thoughts about Sue's return.
