Game of Thrones fans exclaim 'are you kidding?' as famous star lands major Netflix role

The Sandman: Trailer for new Netflix series

Game of Thrones fans are abuzz as Jack Gleeson, famed for his role as the loathsome Joffrey Baratheon, is set to make a grand return to the screen in a major new Netflix project.

The Irish actor has landed a pivotal role in the upcoming second season of The Sandman, marking his most significant part since his departure from the Westerosi drama in 2014. Post-Game of Thrones, Gleeson's appearances have been sparse, dabbling in independent theatre, featuring in the BBC miniseries Out of Her Mind in 2020, and making a cameo in Sex Education's fourth season as Dodgy Mo.

Gleeson is now poised to bring to life the mischievous hobgoblin Puck in the eagerly anticipated continuation of The Sandman, adapted from Neil Gaiman's critically acclaimed graphic novel series.

The Sandman's initial season, which spanned 11 episodes, debuted in 2022 with Allan Heinberg at the helm as executive producer. It starred Tom Sturridge as the titular Dream and Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer.

Allan Heinberg is on board once again for season two, teasing to Netflix Tudum about the upcoming narrative: "In the next chapter of The Sandman, the King of Dreams will come face-to-face - and go toe-to-toe - with the formidable rulers of Hell, Asgard, Faerie, and the realms beyond."

Netflix has sent fans into a frenzy with the announcement of fresh faces joining the second series of The Sandman, revealed on social media alongside a snapshot of the nine new cast members.

Their tweet read, "Ruairi O'Connor, Indya Moore, Ann Skelly, Douglas Booth, Freddie Fox, Laurence O'Fuarain, Clive Russell, Jack Gleeson, and Steve Coogan have officially joined the cast of The Sandman. Welcome to the Dreaming."

Viewers could barely contain their excitement, particularly at seeing former Game of Thrones star Jack Gleeson back in a substantial role.

Social media erupted with reactions, as @fionavalsa tweeted out in bewilderment: "Jack Gleeson? Are you kidding? [shocked face emoji]", and @mercapocy let out an ecstatic shriek: "JACK GLEESON I COULD CRY."
