The Repair Shop: Guests gets emotional after item is fixed

The Repair Shop turned emotional as presenter Jay Blades struggled to hold back tears.

During Tuesday's instalment (July 2) of the BBC programme, which was first broadcast in 2022, Fredericka and Louisa Charles arrived hoping to restore their precious family item.

The sisters, who hail from London, presented Mark Stuckey and Sonnaz Nooranvary with a 1960s radiogram. The piece of furniture belonged to their mother and father, who were part of the Windrush generation.

Their parents, originally from Dominica, were given the opportunity to start a new life in England after people from the Caribbean were called on to help rebuild the country following the war.

The radiogram was one of their first major purchases. Fredericka said that the radiogram was used mainly on a Sunday because that was regarded as "the big social day" where their extended family would gather and listen to music.

After Louisa and Fredericka's father died in 2013, their family would gather and "play a couple of his tunes on it." But the siblings were devastated when the radiogram suddenly stopped working in 2019.

They returned to the repair shop later in the programme and brought a record with them.

Fredericka was holding a Mona Lisa record by Nat King Cole - a track their parents would often play. "They're anticipating it's working," joked Jay as Mark quipped: "Well, that's what I was wondering."

Asked what it means for their item to be working again, Fredericka confessed: "Um, joy, really. Joy and really happy memories." As Mark removed the sheet to show off their newly restored radiogram, Louisa immediately broke down in tears.

As they heard the music coming from the device, Louisa was overcome with emotion as she put her head in her hands. Fredericka struggled to hold back the tears, while Jay and Mark were touched by what they were hearing.

Jay began welling up as the sisters thanked them for their services. Fredericka added: "That transported me right back and all I could see was my mum and my dad."

The 54-year-old told them: "I can't thank you enough for bringing it in... and taking me back down memory lane." Mark added: "It's been a real pleasure, it really has. Now, time to enjoy."
