Doctor Who fans convinced classic companion is returning after spin-off rumours

Doctor Who: The eleventh Doctor meets The Curator

Fans of hit BBC series, Doctor Who seem to think Martha Jones could be making an unexpected return to the current series.

Martha, played by actress Freema Agyeman first appeared in the iconic series back in 2007. Replacing Rose Tyler played by Billie Piper, Martha was tasked with aiding the tenth Doctor who was played by the much-loved David Tennant at the time.

But could she be making an epic return to the show to help the Doctor, who is currently being portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, during The War Between The Land and The Sea? Some fans online seem to think so.

Heading over to X, one TV watcher wrote: "Apparent details regarding The War Between The Land and The Sea (courtesy of Brandon B on Gallifrey Base)." They then shared a leaked image of a storyline that is about tot take place.

It read: "Martha Jones will be leading the series in a rural, present-day English town. And yes the UNIT team are involved (Kate, Shirley and Mel etc.) The title isn't literal (as a lot of people have said recently), and it's 'quite distinctive' to previous spin-offs."

Reacting to the rumours, one fan quizzed: "If the Martha Jones rumours are true, I wonder if she's still married to Mickey. Or if she'll have always have been married to someone else?"

While another penned: "I'm not sure if the rumors are true about a spin-off. But I'd LOVE to see a Fifteen & Martha dynamic on-screen!"

After a whirlwind of ten adventures spanning thirteen episodes, Martha Jones made the bold decision to bid farewell to the TARDIS in 2010. However at the time, her character was often criticised for her unrequited love for the Doctor, which was evident from their first encounter on the moon filled with Rhinos.

Following an explosive and emotionally charged finale, Martha discovered her self-worth and chose to step away from her time-travelling escapades. She knew when it was time to exit, marking a brief but character-centric stint, which contrasted with some companions who have since joined the TARDIS.

TV crticis have claimed that this may be the reason why Martha is a slightly overlooked as a Doctor Who companion throughout the show's history. Positioned between the dramatic events of "Doomsday" and Catherine Tate's tear-jerker of a farewell in the titanically epic Doctor Who episode of "Journey's End," Martha's departure seemed rather small in comparison.

Martha's character did however offer so much during her short time in the TARDIS, but her character’s multiple appearances following her departure, and Agyeman’s willingness to return, gives fans much hope that viewers may just see the character return again. Leaving the show as a UNIT officer also sets her up for more adventures with the Doctor in the future.
