House of the Dragon Season Two Episode Three Review - Mass, unhinged chaos

Who do you trust? Short answer: not a clue. There is nowhere that unleashes mass unhinged chaos quite like the House of the Dragon.

Almost immediately from the get-go, we see two sides drawing blood. The hour that follows is a flurry of dragons, nudity, thunderstorms, with some dialogue thrown in between.

Fans of season one see a superb callback to a young Rhaenyra and the scene of Daemon facing his own past actions was pretty impressive in Harrenhal, where he experiences quite a disturbing sequence.

function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=114945&playerApiId=v114945');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)} window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v114945"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

I thought Matt Smith did an excellent job of capturing all those emotions. The cinematography and acting all came together to capture the shock and grief of Daemon’s decisions. Amazing work all round.

Arguably, House of the Dragon has some of the best-written characters in any TV show, especially in highlighting the ones we desperately want to be killed off.

The pure hatred I have for the big-headed Ser Christon Cole could change - no person is 100 percent “good” or 100 percent “bad” – every human being is highly complicated.

But for a moment, I wanted his character to be burned by a dragon. The writers did let him live (of course), so this could potentially lead to his horrific downfall later on in the series.

Equally, very violent and rude characters, such as the Aemond Targaryen and King Aegon, have very likeable attributes. Aemond is a shy and troubled soul, whilst Aegon is a joker.

Being honest, the characters’ actions are so unpredictable and motives change so much that we have to sort of give up on trying to figure out who the “good guys” and “bad guys” are. No plotline is absolute here. But what about the females, you cry?

Meanwhile, Rhaenyra has tried to avoid bloodshed at every cost, showed mercy, tried to reason with her enemies, literally infiltrated King's Landing to have peace, and was shown nothing but betrayal and loss at each time.

She decides to take matters into her own hands and sneak her way into the city to speak to Alicent. This is what everyone has been waiting for.

Alicent and Rhaenyra’s encounter is the best scene in the episode. Emma D’Arcy does well to deliver an emotional response, captivating the frustration and hopelessness of Rhaenyra as a deposed queen.

However, fans finally see Alicent’s horror as she realises that she’s started a genocide over a misinterpretation. As Rhaenyra becomes a voice of reason, Alicent dismisses her as she realises that everything has gone too far.

After all, it wouldn’t be House of the Dragon without plenty of blood being spilt. So, I shall be sitting next Sunday, to watch the next epic rollercoaster and see what destruction lies ahead.
