Gary Lineker has risked the wrath of England captain Harry Kane once again after hitting out at the Three Lions’ faltering Euro 2024 display against Slovakia. Gareth Southgate’s side failed to register a single shot on target before Jude Bellingham’s wondergoal in the 95th minute drew the scores level at 1-1 and forced the match into extra time. And Harry Kane popped up with a winner at the start of the extra period of play.

England were favourites to lift the trophy coming into the tournament but underwhelmed in the group stages, despite remaining unbeaten and finishing top of Group C.

But their struggles continued at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday night as they almost went crashing out of the tournament.

On Monday, Lineker discussed Sunday’s clash on his The Rest is Football podcast before turning his attention to Saturday’s quarter-final against Switzerland.

And the former striker exclaimed: “We are in the quarter-final, but it is hard to be that hopeful. If you had said at the start of the tournament England would be in the quarter-finals against Switzerland, you would have said fantastic - you fancy your chances there. Big favourites. But I don’t think they are big favourites. Far from it.

“We can’t pretend. I look at the quality of players England have at their disposal - but you have got to get something out of them.

The Three Lions are among the favourites to win this summer's Euro 2024 tournament and you can get your hands on the brand new Nike home and away kits before the first whistle.

“I look at them at the moment and see a team of lost souls. They don’t seem to know what they are doing, what their jobs are, how the team is supposed to be playing. Now I am sure they have been told, it is whether they’ve bought into it.

“They are playing in a style that is alien to most of them because most of them play a high press, really dynamic, sharp short passing football [for their clubs]. I do feel for the players - there is no lack of effort or commitment.”

Lineker has been critical of England throughout the tournament, describing their display in the 1-1 draw against Denmark as “s***”.

And as England captain Kane addressed comments from pundits ahead of his side’s final group game, he told the media: “I always feel like they have a responsibility.

“I know they have got to be honest and give their opinion, but also they have a responsibility of being an ex-England player that a lot of players look up to that people do listen to them and people do care what they say.

“The bottom line is we haven't won anything as a nation for a long, long time and a lot of these players were part of that as well. And they know how tough it is - so it is not digging anyone out.

“We all want to win a major tournament and I'm sure they want us to win a major tournament and being as helpful as they can and building the lads up with confidence would be a much better way of going about it.”
