Simon Cowell has candidly expressed that he's likely to "drop dead" before he retires, as the thought of not working doesn't sit well with him.

The 64-year-old X Factor and Britain's Got Talent mogul reflected on his father's retirement from a corporate job, which instilled in Simon the value of being your own boss.

He shared with Hello! magazine his determination to keep going: "Oh God no. I'll probably drop dead doing what I'm doing. As long as I think there's a need or a purpose and it's something I can do well, I'm up for it."

Simon recounted of his father's retirement: "I remember the day my dad retired - it was very sad because he really didn't want to stop working, but he had no choice as he worked for a big company," reports the Mirror.

He recalled the warning his father gave him during his youth, "He said to me when I was young, 'If you can try to work for yourself, do,' and it always stuck in my head. Seeing what he went through was hard."

Cowell also praised his father's mental acuity, stating that he could have continued working "for another 20 years" due to his brain being "amazing".

Lauren Silverman, Simon's fiancee, seems to have made peace with his relentless drive, admitting to the publication that she knows she's "never going to change him", accepting that "Simon is Simon".

She explained that part of evolving with someone in a relationship is "accepting" the "things you cannot change". Simon "marches to the beat of his own drum", and her approach is to simply "march alongside him".

Lauren added: "In my own quiet way, I always talk about legacy with Simon and ask him what he wants to leave behind because he's done it all. I'm absolutely supportive of Simon and all the things he endeavours to do."

Despite his towering status in the music industry, Simon had quite the modest start, having once worked in the mailroom at EMI Music Publishing, as he disclosed on The Diary Of A CEO.

It seems that Simon's son, Eric, is also set to be a part of his father's impressive legacy, showing an early interest in music.

Eric has taken up drumming, "loves music" and has a particular affection for One Direction.

Interestingly, he was oblivious to the fact that his father was instrumental in their success on The X Factor, prompting Simon to quip: "I sort of put them together."
