Bridgerton is back and its creator has spoken out what sets “season three apart” from the rest of the franchise.

Season three of the Netflix period drama made its debut on Thursday, May 16 with half of the episodes dropping onto the streamer in one go.

This time around, it is Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan) in the spotlight as she is looking to find a husband and leave her annoying mother and sisters behind.

Coincidentally, her lifelong friend and secret love Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) has returned from his travels, only to find that he and Penn are no longer as close as they were.

But the line between friendship and love begins to blur when he begins to help her find a suitable match.

Ahead of season three part one’s release, creator Shonda Rhimes talked of what fans can expect from this series.

She also delved into how this outing is different from seasons one and two which aired in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

Rhimes elaborated: “One of the things that really sets this season apart is the fact that we are dealing with two romantic partners who we already know.

“Usually, we already know one of them — one of them is a Bridgerton and then the other one is somebody we've never met before, and then we get to know them.”

“But this time, we've spent two seasons getting to know these characters already.

“We know Colin, we know Pen. So the idea that we're going to get to see them get together, it's a very different feeling.”

Bridgerton season one focussed on the eldest sister Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dyvenor) who went on to find love with her brother Anthony Bridgerton’s (Jonathan Bailey) old friend Simon Basset (Rege Jean-Page).

It was then in season two that newcomer Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) was introduced and soon fell head over heels for Anthony, despite his pending wedding to her sister Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran).

Why did Harry and Meghan make a Netflix series about their life?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have found themselves at the centre of public attention since they took a step back from senior royal duties in 2020.

In a trailer for the Netflix series about them, Prince Harry told viewers that “no one sees what’s happening behind closed doors” in a reference to how their lives may differ from what the public think about the couple. Meghan adds: “When the stakes are this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?”.

Reports suggested the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could receive up to $100 million for making the show, although this has been disputed and the true figure is unknown.

There is still plenty more to come from this third series with the remaining half yet to be released on Netflix.

Part two of season three is scheduled to come out in a month’s time on Thursday, June 13.

Fans won’t, however, have to wait to find out if there is going to be a season four as shortly after series two’s release two years ago, Bridgerton was given a double renewal.

Bridgerton is available to watch on Netflix.
