Manchester United flop Antony pulled out a Sonic the Hedgehog teddy as he celebrated his first Premier League goal of the season on Saturday. The Brazil international slotted the ball into the right corner beyond the outstretched arm of away goalkeeper Arijanet Muric as the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by 19th-place Burnley.

United shelled out £81.3million to land Antony from Ajax in August 2022 just weeks after Erik ten Hag had made the move to Old Trafford from the Johan Cruyff Arena. The transfer fee made Antony the fourth most expensive player in Premier League history at the time. But he has flattered to deceive in England.

During his debut campaign at United, the winger contributed just four goals and two assists in the Premier League. And this time around his only top-flight goal involvement before this weekend came when he laid on a Alejandro Garnacho strike during his team’s 4-3 defeat at Chelsea earlier this month.

But Antony was clearly in the mood to welcome the attention after breaking the deadlock against the Clarets. After seeing the ball hit the back of the net, the 24-year-old picked up the Sonic teddy from the side of the pitch and hugged a photographer before holding the toy above his head and pointing at it.

United would have been confident of securing all three points after gaining the upper hand in their penultimate home game of the season. But they were brought back down to earth with a bang three minutes before the end as erratic goalkeeper Andre Onana jumped into Zeki Amdouni and cost his side a penalty. Amdouni dusted himself down to convert from the spot as United failed to win for the 18th time in the top-flight this season.

The result means United are six points behind fifth-place Tottenham and just one point above seventh-place Newcastle, who thrashed Sheffield United 5-1 on Saturday.

And following the contest at Old Trafford, United boss Ten Hag explained: “Strong start to the game. Loads of chances then we lost control in the second part of the first half. Burnley came back in the game and had some chances. Second half was all ours and we are in a winning position and we give the game away at the end.

“Very frustrated, shouldn't happen. You put yourself in difficult positions. Over many phases of the game we did very good so at the end we have to take the three points and the clean sheet. We gave it away again at the end.”
