BBC Breakfast's Naga Munchetty branded 'disgraceful' as she clashes with MP Mel Stride

Breakfast: Naga Munchetty and Mel Stride clash

BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty left fans seething after her interview with an MP.

The news reader returned to the red sofa on Friday (April 19) alongside her regular co-host Charlie Stayt. One of the flagship programme's top stories was the news that an Israeli missile had reportedly hit Iran.

To get more information on the story, Naga, 49, spoke to work and pensions secretary Mel Stride. The MP agreed that the government's main aim was to "de-escalate" tensions with the region.

Naga moved on to asking the MP questions with his "work and pensions secretary hat on". The radio presenter touched upon the "sick note" culture, to which Stride explained that they are aiming to give people the support they need after being signed off from work.

He explained: "We have seen increasing prevalence in mental health in society. Work is there as part of the solution. It's good for people to have good work, the evidence shows that."

The host asked: "94 percent have been signed off by GPs. Do you think fewer than 94 percent should have been signed off by GPs?" The 62-year-old responded: "I think many more people. with the right support, are," before Naga interjected.

"Sorry. No no no. That's not my question," she said. After rephrasing her question, Stride hit back: "Well I think I did answer your question," before continuing with his original answer.

The interview turned tense as Naga claimed the politician wasn't answering her questions properly before probing whether Stride felt that GPs were not doing their jobs correctly. Later in the interview, Naga asked: "Do you believe that you respect mental health problems?"

Stride insisted: "Yes I do. I'm on the public record very clearly saying that I think the fact that as a society we have developed such that we're able to talk about mental health in a much more open way is very significant and I think that means that many people, who in the past sadly would have suffered in silence, are getting the support and the treatment that they need and I think that is extremely important."

Viewers fumed with Naga's line of questioning as they took to social media to vent their frustrations. One wrote: "@BBCNaga once again demonstrating her lack of intelligence and left-wing bias. Disgraceful “interview” with #melstride @conservatives in which she ignored his “yes” answer to her baiting question 3x before pursuing her own irrelevant line. She’s a disgrace."

Another agreed: "@BBCBreakfast for god sake Naga listen to answers being given by minister instead of attempting unsuccessfully to have some sort of gotcha scenario. He specifically answered that Drs are on occasions signing people off, but that was only part of the issue - work actually helps!"

Echoing this, a third said: "@BBCBreakfast what another disgraceful style of questioning by Manchetty this morning as she continues to try and undermine a government official. Shameful."

A fourth weighed in: "Would someone please tell Naga Munchetty that if she asks smartarse questions she needs to be smart enough to understand the answers."
