Leeds United are reportedly hoping to re-sign Kalvin Phillips over the summer if they manage to secure promotion to the Premier League. Daniel Farke’s side are currently third in the Championship and firmly in the race to return to the top flight, may that be automatically or via the play-offs.

Phillips joined Manchester City from Leeds in 2022 in a deal worth £45million after a sensational few seasons in the Premier League at Elland Road. However, his time under Pep Guardiola has not been anything to remember.

The England international has struggled for minutes at the Etihad Stadium, with Rodri proving too difficult to displace on a weekly basis and his cameos leaving plenty to be desired. Phillips was finally allowed to leave the club recently, signing for West Ham on loan in January.

Similarly, the 28-year-old has been unable to find his best form at the London Stadium and a return to City this summer is firmly on the cards. Though it may not be long until Phillips finds himself on the move again.

According to the Daily Mail, Leeds are ‘ready to explore’ a loan move to bring the midfielder back to the club if they are able to secure promotion back to the Premier League. The higher powers at the club are intent on splashing the cash if promotion is achieved, and the chance to bring back a player with a ‘deep-rooted emotional connection’ to the club is too good to ignore.

Phillips would be interested in returning to Leeds if they are a top-flight outfit, may that be on loan or permanently – though the latter is unlikely as City are not willing to part ways with the out-of-favour playmaker for anything less than £30m.

Leeds will be keen to focus on the task at hand before shortlisting their priority targets for the summer transfer window though. They are currently one point adrift of the automatic promotion places and have won just one of their last five matches which is hindering their chances of a return to the Premier League.

Phillips will be keen to put himself in the shop window before the season concludes too, as his former side are unlikely to be the only team to register an interest in acquiring his services.

Newcastle were previously keen on the midfielder and could be tempted to reignite their pursuit as they remain in the market for reinforcements in central areas.
