Liverpool reach 'verbal agreement' with Ruben Amorim as Chelsea hijack plan falters
Liverpool have reportedly reached a ‘verbal agreement in principle’ with Ruben Amorim, with negotiations ongoing to secure the signature of the Sporting boss this summer. The Portuguese boss was identified by the Reds as their top target to succeed Jurgen Klopp after Xabi Alonso vowed to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.

The shock news sparked the Reds’ higher powers into life in the managerial market, with several options being shortlisted as potential replacements.
Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann and Simone Inzaghi are among those to have been linked with a move to the club, with Alonso also the subject of interest before he ruled that he had no intention of leaving the BayerArena this summer.
Amorim consistently remained towards the top of the shortlisted candidates, and Liverpool appear to have taken a significant step towards acquiring his services. According to Sky Sports Germany, a ‘verbal agreement in principle’ has been reached with the 39-year-old.

Liverpool have been pushing for Amorim over the past few weeks, and their insistence on acquiring his services appears to have paid off.
The Merseyside outfit still must strike an agreement with Sporting over the fees involved in the deal and the ‘deal can still fall through’, which could be music to the ears of Chelsea. The Blues are also among Amorim’s suitors and have enquired about his availability.

The Premier League strugglers look set to miss out though, with Liverpool now closing in on the promising manager. Bayern Munich had also shortlisted Amorim as a potential replacement for Thomas Tuchel but it was ‘not advanced’. The Reds will be hoping to wrap up a deal for Amorim sooner rather than later - despite being in advanced talks and having an agreement in place - to stop clubs from potentially hijacking the move.
It has previously been reported that a fee in the region of £10million would test the resolve of Sporting, however reports in Portugal this morning rubbished those claims. Portuguese newspaper Record claimed that Amorim has a release clause of £17.1m in his contract for European clubs and a £26m clause for clubs in the Primera Liga.
