800 years in existence, 200 years under construction, 13 million visitors and only two hours to be engulfed by flames. Figures like that stun; as did the yellowish smoke that fell on Paris on the evening of 15 April, 2019, when one of the cityâs most-loved monuments was ravaged by fire, as Parisians helplessly bore witness, praying for the iconic cathedral to withstand the blaze.
While the two towers survived the fire, sadly the Viollet-le-Duc spire went up in smoke and the roof that housed the cathedralâs famous ribbed oak beam vaulting, known as âla forêtâ, fell too.
Notre-Dame may have lost some of its splendour, but it will no doubt rise from the ashes once again. In tribute, Vogue looks back at the most beautiful vintage images of the cathedral from the 1930s to the 1980s.
