Hi Traveler,
My name is Sarah Kingdom, and I am one of the writers here at
TravelAwaits. I’ve just returned to reality after the most wonderful time in the magnificent
Maldives, and the
TravelAwaits team invited me to share about my experience. If you are not familiar with the Maldives, they are a collection of islands and atolls in the Indian Ocean southwest of India, and while they might seem far-flung, they are absolutely worth the visit.
Waking up each morning at
Lux* South Ari Atoll, a long-legged, grey heron always seemed to be standing on a nearby sandbank, watching me as I wandered down the steps from my overwater bungalow for an early morning dip. I didn’t actually need to leave my room to see into the water, as I had a glass “window” in the floor beside my bed that looked directly into the turquoise water below; at night I could see schools of fish — and the occasional baby shark — cruising under my villa.
Breakfast in the underwater restaurant at
Anantara Kihavah Bay was another highlight of my trip. Nothing quite beats lobster eggs benedict and a mimosa while watching sea turtles, eagle rays, and colorful tropical fish glide past the huge panes of glass that form the restaurant walls. Another of my favorite underwater experiences was snorkeling with the giant reef manta rays. They are some of the largest rays in the world, and grow to 16 feet, which is almost the size of a small car!
We enjoyed a wine and cheese tasting in the cellar at
JOALI, and I must confess, for someone who doesn’t know much about wines, I learned a lot. If you're a wine enthusiast, exploring this wine cellar full of hand-selected wines from around the world is an absolute must. Just as memorable was Japanese dining with a twist at Saoke restaurant — where we sampled classic sushi, sake, and teppanyaki while watching whitetip reef sharks in the waters below.
From seaplanes, submarine trips, and sampling traditional Maldivian food to art classes, spa treatments, learning about coral “farming,” and an underwater wine tasting, this was a trip to remember. I also did so much snorkeling that my fingers and toes shriveled to raisins by the end of my stay! Another highlight: stargazing through a telescope so powerful that, with its 40,000x magnification, we could see the moon’s craters and the rings of Saturn. Not something I ever expected to be doing on a tropical island!
