SAS confirms it will join SkyTeam on 1 September

SAS has confirmed it has signed an Alliance Adherence Agreement with SkyTeam, which will see it join the alliance at the start of September.

The move follows restructuring of the airline, which is seeing SkyTeam member Air France-KLM take a stake in SAS.

Earlier this month SAS confirmed it would leave Star Alliance at the end of August, but there was some uncertainty over exactly when the airline would officially join SkyTeam.

At the time SAS said simply that it was in “advanced negotiations with SkyTeam and many of its member carriers to develop and grow extensive commercial relationships”.

But the carrier has now confirmed that it will be inaugurated into the SkyTeam alliance on 1 September, adding that “From the moment SAS joins SkyTeam, EuroBonus members will enjoy benefits across most SkyTeam airlines”.

Eurobonus Silver members will be recognised as SkyTeam Elite level members, while Gold and Diamond members will be recognised as Elite Plus, with benefits including lounge access, and priority check-in, boarding and baggage handling.

SAS will be the first new SkyTeam member carrier since Virgin Atlantic joined in March 2023.

Commenting on the news Anko van der Werff, SAS president and CEO, said:

“We are very excited to now have reached this pivotal milestone in SAS’ alliance transition journey. EuroBonus members will be able to enjoy new destinations and benefits as part of the SkyTeam alliance family, marking the start of an exciting future for customers, partners and employees alike.

“SAS customers will benefit from SkyTeam’s strong global presence in many of the world’s major aviation hubs and from its focus on strategic partnerships and innovative sustainability initiatives.”
