Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has signed a strategic partnership with Veovo to roll out passenger flow technology across its three UK airports.

The agreement will see Veovo’s Passenger Flow Management solution being used at Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports, enabling MAG to “better understand how people move and spend their time within each airport, and how this differs from flight to flight”.

The system will make use of 3D stereo cameras, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology and the airports’ wifi infrastructure, to provide data on queue times at key process points and provide flight-specific insights including dwell times and movement.

Veovo said the technology would provide “actionable intelligence to tailor airport services and reduce wait times”.

“Passenger flow can differ significantly depending on the airline, time of day, and destination – impacting terminal operations in different ways,” said Nick Woods, CIO of Manchester Airports Group (MAG)

“By understanding how people travel from kerb to gate with Veovo’s Passenger Flow Management system, we can make data-driven decisions to improve experiences.”

This week Manchester Airport reported record passenger traffic for the sixth consecutive month, welcoming 2,152,799 million passengers in March.

The airport said that despite the record traffic numbers, it had also recorded the second consecutive month in which “every single passenger waited for less than 15 minutes to get to security”.

Manchester Airport is currently in the final phase of a £1.3 billion Transformation Programme, which recently saw the rollout of a new baggage system at Terminal 2, capable of processing 3,000 bags per hour.
