The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will formally rebrand myGovID to myID in mid-November, about a year after it received the funding to do so.

The ATO confirmed the timeline for the rebrand of the digital identity app on Friday.

The tax office received $11.5 million in the mid-year economic and fiscal outlook (MYEFO) at the end of 2023 [pdf] to deliver the rebrand.

The new name and logo surfaced in March of this year when the ATO applied to trademark a myID name and logo.

“The rename aims to resolve confusion between the myGovID app and myGov, following a recommendation from the myGov user audit,” the ATO said in a statement.

The user audit had suggested that the government “consider merging the front ends of myGov and myGovID into a single mobile app” to “resolve widely aired confusion between the two apps”.

Recognising this could “be a costly exercise”, it put forward an alternative to “rebrand myGovID, positioning it as a distinctly separate government offering to myGov.”

Separately, the government suggested the rebrand "also reflects the additional ways ... to use your Digital ID in the future for more government services and, eventually, private sector services", and "reflects the community’s understanding of Digital ID."

The government is in the process of trying to reboot myGov, seeing it as underutilised.

The rebrand of myGovID is set to be pushed as an update through the various app stores in November.

“Existing users will not need to set up a new myID,” the ATO said.
