Hideki Matsuyama got the better of Collin Morikawa at The Sentry, having set a new PGA Tour record for 72 holes after finishing with an eight-under 65.

His remarkable score of 35 under for the tournament secured him a three-shot victory over Morikawa on the Plantation course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Matsuyama clinched the win with an eight-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole, celebrating with a modest fist pump. This putt made sure he beat Australian golfer Cameron Smith's 2022 record, havinig finished on 34 under, at Kapalua by one.

This victory in Hawaii is Matsuyama's 11th PGA Tour title. And Morikawa struggled for words as he reacted to the Japanese star's astonishing triumph.

In an interview post-round, the American star said: "Yeah, excuse my language, but f***, 35-under par, that's low. He was matching me yesterday shot for shot, and I felt like I was playing lights out, right?

"Like, yes, you could leave some shots out there, but you shoot 11 under on any golf course, you're going to be happy, right? Today he just never let up. Then you get to the third hole and the guy holes it. I just knew I had to be on top of everything, and just kind of let a few slip on that front nine."

England's Harry Hall was the top performer among the British players, scoring a three-under 70 on Sunday to finish in a tie for eighth place.
