Sergio Garcia has insisted he could feature for the European Ryder Cup team in 2025 if he and the DP World Tour can “find middle ground” over a return to the circuit. The 44-year-old terminated his World Tour card in May 2023 after joining the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League.

Garcia is Europe's record points scorer in the Ryder Cup with 28.5 and has missed just two of the events since making his debut 25 years ago.

But he has a number of 'outstanding sanctions' to overcome before he can reapply for his DP World Tour membership, according to a spokesperson of the Tour.

“If things improve a little bit with the European Tour and the things that they ask for and the things that we are asking for get close, the decision is 99 per cent,” Garcia stated in an interview with GolfMagic as he discussed a potential return to the Tour.

“But if they don't make things a tiny bit easier - I'm giving up some things - but they also need to give up a few things.

“And if we can find that middle ground then you will see me playing a handful of European Tour events. If not, then it will be a little bit tougher - but hopefully that won't be the case.”

The Spaniard added: “[Returning to the Tour is] something I've been wanting to do since I joined LIV Golf. Mostly because I want to be eligible for the Ryder Cup and the possibility of making another team and helping the European team retain the Cup in this aspect.

“But I've said from the beginning, the European Tour is the Tour I came from. To me it's my home Tour and I want to support it.

“I feel like I still have a good push in the game that I can help some of the tournaments I would be willing to play in. And hopefully things with the European Tour and the players and stuff like that, hopefully things improve for everyone and we can achieve that. It's my main goal.”

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald was asked about Garcia’s potential Ryder Cup involvement during a press conference in New York earlier this week.

And the Briton teased the player’s return as he explained: “First of all, obviously he resigned his membership a couple of years ago but we've had a few chats.

“He's considering rejoining. He'd have to follow all the rules and regulations like everyone else and if he does that then, again, he will be eligible to partake in the Ryder Cup.

“We chatted on the phone a couple of weeks ago. He’s certainly very interested in doing that. He understands everything that’s involved and the decision has to go to him, whether he’s prepared to do all that. But certainly we’ve had that discussion, yes.”
