Tyrrell Hatton has revealed that he felt ‘so bad’ about telling Matt Fitzpatrick that he may have to skip his wedding.
The 2023 Ryder Cup star is set to marry Katherine Gaal later this month, though the ceremony clashes with Spain’s Andalucia Masters at Sotogrande. The calendar crossover was, of course, not an issue for Fitzpatrick. However, it did run the risk of having implications on his guest list.
Hatton has revealed that he had to pre-warn his ex-teammate that he may not have been able to attend as he is desperate to qualify to be a part of Team Europe at the Ryder Cup next year.
The 32-year-old was able to put himself in a strong position to make the cut over the weekend when winning the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which secures his spot in the top 70 of the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai standings and guarantees him two spots in the two final events of the season.
Hatton has now made four DP World Tour appearances to meet the Ryder Cup threshold, and the success puts him into the current top six automatic qualifiers for Luke Donald’s team.
However, it has not been a smooth process for the Brit, with the LIV Golf star recently speaking out about how he had a tough conversation with Fitzgerald about his wedding – which he will now be able to attend after his victory at St Andrews.
He said: “Winning here this week allows me to take some time off. This was my fourth week in a row. I really wanted to get into Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and at the start of last week, I was 94 in rankings.
“I was prepared to play in Sotogrande, and maybe even South Korea if I needed to, to try and make it to Abu Dhabi.
“I was meant to be going to Fitzy's wedding the week in Spain, and I messaged him a few weeks ago and I was like, if I don't have enough points, I might not be able to go and I felt so bad about that. I guess having a little extra motivation to play well.”
With some time now secured to prepare for next month’s events in Abu Dhabi, Hatton will be keen to enjoy some downtime and put himself in a strong headspace to challenge for the 12 spots on Team Europe.
