Famous actor Tom Holland might have ended up on the winning team at the BMW PGA Championship Celebrity Pro-Am this week, but that doesn’t mean Rory McIlroy knew who he was. The pair had an awkward exchange on the practice range in Wentworth, with the world No.3 appearing confused when Holland approached him.
McIlroy, 35, was reaching into his bag when he was interrupted by the Spider-Man and Captain America star.
Holland held out his right hand and timidly said “Hello mate, sorry I’m Tom,” with the four-time major champion hesitant as he accepted the handshake.
“Hi Tom, how you doing?” he replied, with the 28-year-old saying “It’s a pleasure.” The very brief and awkward conversation continued, with McIlroy’s question of “You alright?” met with the response “Yeah good man, how are you?”
After the Northern Irishman declared he was also “good” before the pair got on with hitting practice shots, leaving fans convinced Holland hadn’t been recognised “Rory must be a DC guy - you know Batman and Superman,” wrote @takeitlow65.
@Just01Patriot56 added: “When you shake hands with Peter Parker and will never know…” @FlangeFlanders joked “McIlroy clearly must not be a fan of the podcast……"
But while McIlroy may have been none the wiser, one golfer who certainly needs no introduction to Holland after this week is Tommy Fleetwood. He teamed up with the actor and his two twin brothers, Harry and Sam, to win the Pro-Am event.
Hollywood actor Holland boasts a 2.9 handicap, and helped the foursome to a combined winning score of 31 under par. He has previously appeared at the same event alongside Irish hero and former Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington.
McIlroy meanwhile, was joined by former Real Madrid and Tottenham star and scratch golfer Gareth Bale. Former England cricketer Stuart Broad was also on board with the team finishing 24 under par.

The BMW PGA, one of the highlights of the DP World Tour calendar, got underway this morning. McIlroy started solidly by playing the first six holes at Wentworth in -4.
