Bryson DeChambeau confirmed his reputation as a fan favourite after signing autographs for every fan following the second round of the US Open.

The 30-year-old ended Saturday's (June 15) session as the tournament leader as he closes in on a second US Open title, following his triumph at Winged Foot back in 2020.

Aftr the thrilling round in the 124th edition of the competition, DeChambeau - who is nicknamed 'The Scientist' - continued to endear himself to the viewing public in North Carolina. The American used to be perceived as something of a brash character. But that all appears in the past as he told fans to meet him on the other side of the range in order for him to sign autographs for them before leaving.

The California native had a boatland of supporters, many of them young golf fans, waiting for him after his round. And even after a long afternoon, during which DeChambeau ensures he gave himself the best possible chance of victory on Sunday, the 2020 winner reserved time especially for the group as he signed all manner of items and posed for selfies.

Fans posted footage of the golf ace taking the time out to meet his fans as social media users showered him with praise with one X user writing: " Anyone who doesn’t like Bryson just hates themselves! Let golf evolve and be something the masses enjoy!!!" while another added: "Not much of a golf guy, but cool to see Bryson taking care of the fans. Good on him".

One of the American's main competitiors on Saturday was Ludvig Aberg who carded a triple bogey in a underwhelming showing as he sits joint-fifth heading into the final day of the tournament.

Speaking after his performance, DeChambeau said: "It was one of the most difficult putts I have had, so for me, it is just looking at it, being focused, trying to stay focused for 10 minutes. You're trying to play conservative golf that gives you the opportunity to hit it close in some scenarios."

Aptly nicknamed 'The Scientist, the golf star is known for his analytical approach to the sport which has seen him attempt to gain an edge over his rivals in unique ways, with one of them being soaking his golf balls in Epsom salt.

After topping the 2024 US Open leaderboard on Saturday, DeChambeau revealed: "Yeah, I put my golf balls in Epsom salt. I'm lucky enough that Connor, my manager, does that now. I don't have to do it. But essentially we float golf balls in a solution to make sure that the golf ball is not out of balance.

"There was a big thing back in the day where golf balls are out of balance, and it's just because of the manufacturing process. There's always going to be an error, especially when it's a sphere and there's dimples on the edges. You can't perfectly get it in the center."
