Jon Rahm completes LIV Golf switch

LIV Golf star Dean Burmester was embroiled in a heated exchange with a member of the Adelaide crowd on Sunday during the first ever team playoff to take place in the breakaway league.

Burmester, alongside his Stinger captain Louis Oosthuizen played against home favourites Ripper GC in a nail-biting playoff to determine the team champion after Sunday's final round. Both teams finished 54-holes tied at an impressive 53-under-par for the week.

The playoff saw two players from each side return to the course to settle the event, with Burmester and Oosthuizen representing Stinger and the Australian pair Cam Smith and Marc Leishman fighting it out for Ripper.

As expected, the Australian crowd threw their support behind their fellow countrymen Smith and Leishman, leading to a boisterous atmosphere around the 18th hole. Despite this, it seemed as though the South Africans would emerge victorious after both hit their approaches close into the first playoff hole, providing two putts at birdie to win.

However, both Burmester and Oosthuizen narrowly missed their putts, forcing the fourball to return to the tee. As the tension mounted, Burmester sent his tee shot slightly down the right-hand side but still managed to leave himself a clear approach into the green.

Burmester was visibly irritated by the jeering Australian crowd as he prepared for his second shot though, shouting: "Shut the f*** up! " towards the Adelaide gallery. As the crowd continued to taunt during his backswing, Burmester's second shot landed long into the bunker, prompting one of the day's loudest cheers.

With Oosthuizen also in the sand and Leishman close by, it was Ripper who clinched the win in front of their home crowd thanks to Leishman's two-putt par. Despite the unsavoury scenes late on, Australian favourite Smith praised The Grange's atmosphere following his team's victory.

"This week has far exceeded my vision for what was ahead," Smith said. "I think I always knew internally that Australia would really embrace LIV with the culture, with the music, with the entertainment, everything that goes on around it. I always felt like this was the place where it was going to make it big, and how it's been the last couple of years has been just insane.

Going on to rank the Adelaide event as the best he has ever played for a second time, above winning The Open at St Andrews in 2022, the former world No. 2 added: "Last year I said, I'm biased, this is the best tournament I've ever played. I think this year it's done it again."
