Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk made a brutally honest confession after his side dropped two points against Manchester United on Sunday. The Merseyside giant were held to a 2-2 draw after an entertaining Premier League showdown at Anfield.
Liverpool fell behind in the early stages of the second half when Lisandro Martinez thumped the ball into the roof of the net, before drawing level through Cody Gakpo seven minutes later.
Mohamed Salah nudged the hosts ahead from the penalty spot, with United equalising through Amad Diallo 10 minutes before the end. And Arne Slot’s men were lucky to escape with a point after Harry Maguire missed a gilt-edged chance at the death.

Van Dijk was asked to sum up the game as he spoke to Radio 5 Live after the final whistle. And the Dutchman conceded: “It could have been a lot worse if we are absolutely honest with ourselves.
“They had a big chance in the end that could have been a lot worse than where we are now. I'm definitely disappointed with dropping points at home, but it is what it is and we have to move on - and we will.”
The second half of the clash proved to be frenetic affair as both sides attacked at will after a drab first half.
And Van Dijk explained: “We found the 2-1 and then it is about trying to manage the game and keep the ball for longer than three and four passes.

“We lost the ball too easily at times and then we were more open than we should have been. We're not perfect, we're still learning and we have to learn from this as well.”
The centre-back then insisted Liverpool hadn’t underestimated the visitors ahead of kick-off, with United enduring a dismal campaign on the pitch.
“That's all the media,” he added. “Media talk. It's nothing to do with us. We prepared for a very tough game like we have seen today. We didn't think any of that.”

Sunday’s result moved Liverpool six points clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table, with Slot’s side winning 14 of their top flight matches this campaign.
The north west outfit will turn their attention to the Carabao Cup on Wednesday when they travel to Tottenham for a semi-final showdown. The Reds will then host Accrington in the FA Cup third round next Saturday.
They will return to Premier League action with a trip to Nottingham Forest next Tuesday, before travelling to Brentford four days later.
