Liverpool are reportedly set to resist the temptation to spend money in January as they sit in pole position for the Premier League title. The Reds currently lie eight points clear of second placed Nottingham Forest with a game in hand, and nine clear of their main perceived challengers, Arsenal.

That’s despite a lack of signings in the summer, with the club missing out on main midfielder target Martin Zubimendi.

Georgian keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was brought from Valencia but then immediately loaned back to the Spanish side, with Federico Chiesa the only addition for this season following his loan move from Juventus.

Instead, much of the transfer talk at Liverpool has centred around players already at the club. Mohammed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk are all out of contract in the summer, with fans getting anxious at the ongoing talks over new deals.

Supporters have also called for Arne Slot to be allowed to strengthen his squad in January to help the Reds maintain their momentum. Joe Gomez is the latest player to be sidelined after picking up a hamstring injury against West Ham.

Ibrahima Konate, Connor Bradley and Chiesa are also currently unavailable ahead of a hectic month for Slot’s side. As well as Premier League matches, they also have their final league phase games to play in the Champions League and a two-legged League Cup semi final with Tottenham.

But according to The Mail, the club are prepared to take a risk in January not make permanent signings. Instead, Michael Edwards and co will spend the next few months lining up summer signings.

The plan can be considered a risk given it appears that only an injury crisis can derail Liverpool as they continue to surge ahead in the title race. Slot has already had to negotiate losing the likes of Alisson and Diogo Jota for lengthy spells, and will be concerned about losing any further players, particularly in defence.

But FSG have long built a reputation for being particular with signings and not panic buying. And after the 5-0 win over West Ham, Slot insisted he was not focussed on his current players, and not new signings next month.

“I’m very happy with the squad we have, I said this six months ago and everybody was like ‘is this guy crazy?” he said. “But I think the players show the confidence the club and me had in them was all deserved.

“If you look at Jarrel Quansah (who replaced Joe Gomez), he hadn’t played a lot until now, a few appearances. The way he played today shows how important it is that we keep working with these players, because we’re going to need all of them at a certain moment.”
