Liverpool’s dressing room have reportedly backed Mohamed Salah’s decision to speak out about the club’s lack of contract offer. The Egypt international is out of contract at the end of the campaign and hasn’t yet been presented with a new deal.

Salah joined the Reds from Roma in the summer of 2017 and has gone on to gain legendary status at Anfield.

The winger has bagged 223 goals and 99 assists in 368 appearances for the team and has helped them lift a host of trophies.

After bagging a brace, including the winner, during his side’s 3-2 victory over Southampton last weekend, Salah admitted he was disappointed a new contract hadn’t yet been tabled.

“We are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club,” the 32-year-old said. “I’m probably more out than in.

“You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.”

Salah was then labelled as “selfish” by Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher, who admitted he was “disappointed” with the player for airing his views in public.

According to The Independent, Salah’s contract demands are “huge”, with his representatives seeking a deal that befits his status and level.

And the publication have revealed that most senior players at Liverpool respect his approach and see moments like this as a rare opportunity for a player to use their leverage during a short career.

Negotiations between Liverpool and Salah’s camp are ongoing, with the Reds aiming for a layered and structured deal that will recognise the fact the attacker will be in his mid-thirties by the time any fresh deal would be coming to an end. And there is still some distance between player and club.

Salah returned to the pitch on Wednesday night as Liverpool defeated Real Madrid 2-0 in the Champions League. He failed to make it onto the scoresheet in that game, however, and was also off-target from the penalty spot late on.

But ahead of the encounter, Liverpool boss Arne Slot denied Salah’s contract situation was proving to be a distraction.

“The only thing I can say is that if I look at my line-ups, Mo is more in than out. So that quote I can give you,” the Dutchman stated.

“I don't think it distracts Mo at all, maybe it even brings the best out of him if you look at his performances until now. I talk to Mo about what I expect from him, like I do with all the other players, and he is in a good place at the moment.”
