Ruben Amorim has revealed that Jose Mourinho got in touch with a classy message after it was confirmed that he would be replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

The former Sporting boss will be hoping to start his reign on a positive note by beating Ipswich Town in his first Premier League game in charge.

Speaking at his first press conference on Friday afternoon, Amorim lifted the lid on a private message he received from Mourinho ahead of Sunday's match at Portman Road.

He said: "He sent me a message: 'It’s a big club, lovely club with lovely people'. And he’s correct, it still is. We are building a new club.

"I am a different guy. I hope to teach something different here to my players. It’s the best club in England. We want to win, that’s all."

Amorim admitted that he did not realise just how big United were until he arrived on English shores to see for himself.

"It’s bigger [than expected]," he explained. "There’s a lot of departments, you feel here’s a global club. There’s so much to do, not just coaching the team. I’ve had a lot of help. I feel at home."

Asked if the club needs repairing after years of steady decline, he replied: "I don’t know about repair. We have space to grow as a team. We have to improve in a lot of areas.

"I know it’s a different way of playing and we are changing the way we play. We have to change the physical aspect of the team. I don’t know how long it will take. I know at Manchester United we have to win games.

"We need a lot of time because it's a tough league. We have to improve a lot to try to win the title."

Amorim is widely expected to implement the 3-4-3 system he found success with at Sporting, but it remains to be seen how United will set up against Ipswich this weekend.

Quizzed on what needs to change on the pitch, Amorim said: "Simple things, I think. If you want to speak about the team and the way we play, we lose the ball too often. We have to be better at running back and we have to be very good in the details.

"It’s the small things, we have to improve the small things. Understanding the small things, I think, is what I'm good at."
