Manchester United have been boosted by summer signing Leny Yoro's long-awaited return to first-team training ahead of Ruben Amorim's arrival. The £59million centre-back hasn't yet debuted for United after suffering a foot injury that required surgery during the club's pre-season tour of the United States.

Yoro featured against Rangers in Edinburgh and Arsenal in Los Angeles but was forced off in the first half of the Gunners clash and later ruled out for three months.

However, after taking his rehabilitation onto the Carrington training pitch last month, he re-joined team training on Wednesday during preparations for Thursday's Europa League clash with PAOK.

United players were filmed forming a guard of honour for Yoro during the session, which then turned into an assault of head slaps as he charged past his team-mates.

The 18-year-old, who turns 19 later this month, is highly unlikely to face PAOK or Leicester City in Sunday's Premier League match.

United have managed his comeback carefully, which continued on Wednesday as he only participated in 15 minutes of team drills.

However, the November 24 trip to Ipswich Town, which will be Amorim's first outing as the Red Devils' new head coach, has been touted as his target return date.

Erik ten Hag's summer capture of Yoro was considered a major coup, given Real Madrid also pursued his signature before bowing out of the race.

In his early absence, Matthijs de Ligt, who also joined this summer in a £43m deal, has partnered Lisandro Martinez as United's preferred centre-back pairing.

Jonny Evans has continued as a reliable understudy, with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof also options that Amorim will inherit at Old Trafford.

But as his dynamic Sporting side emphatically displayed in Tuesday's 4-1 mauling of Manchester City in the Champions League, Amorim's 3-4-3 system requires an elite level of athleticism.

Yoro has been placed alongside De Ligt and Martinez in many dream back threes, and that should be the route the Portuguese tactician goes once he's fully fit.

There would be understandable reservations about whether Amorim's style would prosper at United if De Ligt, Maguire, Evans or Lindelof were set to operate as the right-sided centre-back.

But Yoro's pace and power make him the prime candidate to fill the role, and Amorim will consider that the sooner he can get up to speed, the better.

The French starlet landed in Manchester as one of the world's most exciting defensive prospects, and that reputation hasn't faded during his spell on the sidelines.

Given his excellent track record with young talent in Lisbon, Amorim will marvel at the opportunity to supervise Yoro's bright career.
