Edu reportedly rejected a lucrative offer to triple his salary as Arsenal launched a desperate bid to keep him at the club, following the shock news that he was on his way out.

The Gunners have confirmed that their sporting director has left after an incredibly successful five-year tenure. The former midfielder returned to North London five years ago as the club's first-ever technical director.

Since then, he has been instrumental behind the scenes in transfer dealings. Edu is now expected to sign a contract with Evangelos Marinakis' multi-club ownership, representing Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave.

It has been claimed that the Brazilian will triple his salary if he completes the move as anticipated. And Arsenal reportedly tried to match this offer in a desperate attempt to keep him at the Emirates.

According to the MailOnline, the Gunners made a counter-offer similar to that proposed by Marinakis, but the allure of working within a multi-club model was too enticing to resist. Edu has explained the reasoning behind his decision to leave.

In a statement on Arsenal's official website, he said: "This was an incredibly hard decision to make. Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club's history.

"It has been a special journey and I thank Stan, Josh, Tim and Lord Harris for the support they've given me. I've loved working with so many great colleagues across our men's, women's and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend.

"Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best."

Meanwhile, Arsenal chief Josh Kroenke has expressed his gratitude towards Edu following his departure but remained tight-lipped about finding an immediate replacement. He said: "We respect Edu's decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward. Everyone at the club wishes him well.

"We are all so fond of him and the positive energy he brings to everything and everyone. Change and evolution is a part of our club. We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition."

The Gunners start their post-Edu chapter with a clash against Inter Milan in the Champions League tomorrow, followed by a trip to Chelsea pre-international break. An intriguing reunion with Edu could be on the cards when they face Forest later this month at home.
