England and Greece will go head-to-head at Wembley in the Nations League tonight, with both sets of players set to wear black armbands.

Three Lions interim boss Lee Carsley will be looking for his third consecutive victory since taking over from Gareth Southgate earlier this year.

The former Everton midfielder guided his side to a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland last month in his first match at the helm, before leading them to a 2-0 triumph against Finland three days later.

Why are players wearing black armbands?

England and Greece players will be wearing black armbands as a tribute to former Sheffield United right-back George Baldock, who was tragically found dead at his home in Athens on Wednesday evening at the age of 31. Greece will also wear black armbands when they take on the Republic of Ireland on Sunday.

Baldock won 12 caps for Greece and was plying his trade for Panathinaikos at the time of his death after leaving the Blades in the summer. His body was found in his swimming pool after his wife had raised the alarm after failing to make contact with him from their home in England.

There will also be a minute’s silence to remember Baldock and Kick It Out founder Lord Herman Ouseley, who died last week at the age of 79.

Greece players ‘devastated’

Sources in the Greece camp have told BBC Sport that players are “devastated” by Baldock’s sudden death.

The Greek FA asked UEFA about a possible postponement of the Wembley encounter but were told it wasn’t possible to rearrange the game due to the busy calendar.

Greece players wrote in a joint statement: “It is impossible to believe that our dear friend and team-mate, George, is no longer with us. Our pain is indescribable. Tonight, we will try to reach the strength of his soul, which is a bright example for us all. Our thoughts are with his family. We will never forget you friend.”

And the Greece national team penned: “With profound sadness and sorrow, the National Team and the Greek Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock.

“There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young, man. The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family.”

Investigation concluded

A post-mortem examination has reportedly concluded that Baldock drowned, with 'microscopic foamy microbubbles' found during tests. Investigators believe the player was dead for up to five hours before he was found.

Samples have been taken for toxicology tests as well, with the results of those set to be announced in 'several days'.
