Lee Carsley anticipates more English youngsters seeking first team opportunities abroad in the future.

Former Manchester City prodigy Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, 20, is currently playing for Borussia Dortmund, while Samuel Iling-Junior is on loan at Bologna after moving to Aston Villa via Juventus.

Angel Gomes, an ex-Manchester United academy graduate, has made his way into the England senior squad under Carsley's guidance, but only after transferring to Lille for more game time.

Ex-England manager Gareth Southgate frequently expressed concern over the low number of English players starting in the Premier League. The current ratio stands at just 32.4 per cent, a slight increase from last season's 31.1 per cent, but still less than a third.

Carsley claims this could motivate players to seek opportunities overseas and also prompt England to be more "proactive" in recruiting dual nationality players. This comes after missing out on talents like Jamal Musiala, who now plays for Germany despite representing England at youth levels.

Interim boss Carsley commented: "It's definitely something we're aware of. It's something Gareth brought to my attention well to everyone's attention a while back - in terms of the pool of players to choose from.

"Where we've improved of late is the dual nationality rule, trying to be a little bit more proactive in terms of our recruitment and those players who are dual nationality, making sure they have really good experiences in the pathway and get them used to being in England shirts and around St George's.

"If you look at the 21s squad for instance and look at the U20/ELS squad there's a lot of talent in the pathway and these players just need opportunities.

"You can see at the minute how Taylor Harwood-Bellis is doing at Southampton in his first season in the Premier League.

"I think given the opportunities we'll have a lot more players but the climate is so extreme in terms of how important it is to stay in the Premier League managers are probably wary of giving young players a chance.

"Because of that we'll probably find a lot more players going abroad. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is a brilliant example of that. Sam Illing-Junior. Going abroad to get minutes and play first team. But it's definitely something I'm aware of."
