Gareth Southgate has revealed that he will speak to those close to him before deciding on whether he will continue as England manager. The 53-year-old has led the Three Lions to successive European Championship finals but has lost them both.
England were 2-1 beaten by Spain in devastating circumstances in Berlin on Sunday evening. Mikel Ozaryabal prodded home the winner in the 86th minute just as England had built some momentum in the game.
Questions will now be raised over Southgate’s future. His eight-year reign has included two finals - the most of any England boss - in addition to a semi-final and a quarter-final in his four tournaments.
It is unclear whether Southgate plans to lead England to the 2026 World Cup. His short-term plans are to speak with key personnel about his performance.
Asked about his future by ITV, Southgate responded: “Now is not the best time to take a decision like that. I’ve got to talk to the right people. It’s not for right now.”
