After a long 48 hours, Euro 2024 action returns this weekend for the round of 16. The knockout stages will begin with Switzerland facing Italy this evening, before host nation Germany take on Denmark.

England then have the chance to silence their critics on Sunday when they take on Slovakia on Sunday. The Three Lions underwhelmed during the group stages with three sub-par displays but they are yet to taste defeat and have managed to secure a favourable route to the final by topping Group C.

Gareth Southgate is expected to shake up his midfield, once more, in the hope of striking gold with his team selection. However, an additional change may be required due to a fresh injury concern.

Italy forced into major defensive changes

Italy have been dealt a significant double injury blow ahead of their clash with Switzerland.

Manager Luciano Spalletti revealed that Inter Milan duo Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco are both unlikely to feature in the round of 16.

Speaking on Friday, the ex-Napoli boss explained: “We’ll look at Bastoni tomorrow morning, Dimarco is out, Bastoni did a portion of the training session today we thought he might be able to resolve it but he had a bit of a setback.

“He’s had a few degrees of fever, we need to see overnight how he responds.”

Riccardo Calafiori is also ruled out through suspension, with Roma’s Gianluca Mancini set to replace him in central defence.

Gareth Southgate's team plans leaked

Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly set to start alongside Declan Rice in midfield for England against Slovakia.

Gareth Southgate has trialled both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Gallager in midfield so far in the tournament, and he has now turned to Mainoo after his impressive second-half display against Slovenia on Tuesday.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the Manchester United teen is in line to start the match.

Southgate is not expected to rejig his frontline, despite calls for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon to be given more game time.

England dealt injury blow

Kieran Trippier is now an injury doubt for England’s clash with Slovakia, forcing Gareth Southgate to find a solution from his right-footed defensive ranks.

The Three Lions only took one natural left-back to Germany this summer in the shape of Luke Shaw, but the Manchester United star is still recovering from a hamstring injury that has ruled him out since February.

Trippier has played as a makeshift left-back in all three of England’s group stage matches, but the Newcastle defender is now a major injury doubt for the last-16.

It is claimed that Ezri Konsa is now ‘on standby’ to stand in as a replacement after his impressive season with Aston Villa.
