Gary Lineker says that Gareth Southgate must demand more from captain Harry Kane following England’s 1-1 draw with Denmark at Euro 2024.

The Three Lions looked toothless in possession for the majority of the 90 minutes, with a stroke of luck helping them open the scoring in the first half.

England supporters who travelled to Germany were not afraid of letting their voices heard at full time, with the players leaving the pitch to a chorus of boos.

Speaking after the game, BBC pundit and ex-striker Lineker revealed that he felt Kane’s poor performance was a key factor in England’s overall struggles.

He said: “In all honesty, I think Harry Kane needs to do a lot better. I think his movement was minimal, he didn’t look to go behind and he doesn’t often, but even when he comes short, he’s just drifting short very lethargically, he’s plodding short and that’s not going to help.

“When you’re a striker, your two jobs are obviously score goals, which he’s brilliant at and has been all his career and he’s wonderful at that sort of thing.

“But I think he needs his manager to say ‘Right, I need a little bit more from you, Harry’. I would have expected that if I had had that kind of performance.

“As a striker, he’s up against three at the back so he has got to stretch that team. Even when he comes short, you’ve got to go that way first, to keep them up there, and then you come short so that when you’ve got the ball coming short, you don’t have to go 20 yards to go short.

“And he just ambles in and they (defenders) just let him go so he’s not creating space for himself for starters.”

Lineker had been just as scathing on the BBC at half-time when he said: “Can I offer a slight theory? If you want to press, it has to come from your centre forward first.

“Harry does not press and he has not pressed in that first half. He’s barely moved. Then the team goes deeper and Harry Kane goes even deeper and even when you get the ball you have nothing to hit. I just don’t understand.”

Ollie Watkins

Kane was able to open his Euro 2024 account in Germany when tapping home from close range in the 18th minute after Kyle Walker’s cross ricocheted into his path.

It was Kane's 13th goal for England at major tournaments - three more than any other player.

But after Denmark equalised through Morten Hjulmand, the Bayern Munich striker was unable to leave another mark on the game and was surprisingly replaced by Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins in the 69th minute – who entered the fray as part of a triple substitution along with Eberechi Eze and Jarrod Bowen.

The substitutes were unable to help England find a winner but they still sit on four points from two Euro 2024 games, meaning they are almost certain to enter the knockout stages.
