Manchester United have tabled a final bid of £3million to secure Dan Ashworth from Newcastle, but the Magpies have swiftly dismissed the offer as they hold out for a sum closer to £15m.

The deadlock has sparked a standoff between the two Premier League clubs over Ashworth's fate. The situation may only be resolved if Ashworth himself takes action against his current employers by initiating arbitration proceedings.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner of United, is keen to bring Ashworth on board as sporting director in a bid to revamp operations at Old Trafford.

Despite having an agreement with United, Ashworth finds himself in limbo, having been put on gardening leave for 18 months since February after expressing his desire to depart Newcastle.

The initial demand from Newcastle was a hefty £20m, a figure that Ratcliffe reportedly scoffed at, deeming it "absurd".

Negotiations have occurred, but the Mirror report that United have stood firm on not exceeding a £3m payout for Ashworth's expertise. With Newcastle unyielding, United are prepared to let them continue shouldering Ashworth's salary without his services.

Considering Newcastle's previous compensation fee of £2.6m paid to Brighton for Ashworth in 2022, United view this as the benchmark for any deal.

Hopes of having Ashworth in place for the upcoming season are fading fast amidst this escalating transfer saga.

Since acquiring a 27.7 per cent stake in United for £1.25billion in December, Ratcliffe has instigated a shake-up of the top brass at Old Trafford.

CEO Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough have both exited, with United naming Omar Berrada as Arnold's successor.

Meanwhile, Jason Wilcox has been enticed away from Southampton to take up the role as United's new technical director.
