Bruno Fernandes insists he will only walk away from Manchester United if he is told he is not wanted. The Red Devils captain has been linked with a shock departure from Old Trafford and Saudi Arabia has been mooted as a potential destination.
Fernandes returned to the United team and performed well in their 3-2 victory over Newcastle on Wednesday night. His comeback from injury is a welcome boost for Erik ten Hag ahead of a crunch do-or-die final-day game against Brighton.
But surprise speculation has surrounded the Portugal international in recent weeks. While wide-ranging reports suggest that Fernandes will remain at United, there is claimed to be interest from Al-Nassr.
However Fernandes, who has scored 15 goals and provided 11 assists this season, insists that he will stay at United if he is wanted by the club’s hierarchy. New minority owners INEOS are set to oversee a sweeping overhaul of both the squad and the club’s structure this summer.
Asked about his future, Fernandes told Sky Sports: “I will be here until when the club wants me and the club wants me to be a part of the future. If for some reason they don’t want me, then I will go.”
The 29-year-old is contracted by United until 2026. The Mirror claimed this week that Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo is backing an Al-Nassr pursuit of Fernandes.
United welcomed Fernandes back for the final two games of the Premier League campaign. He shone in the win over Newcastle and will likely play a pivotal role if Ten Hag’s side are to beat Brighton. Sitting eighth heading into the final day, United need to beat Brighton to have any hope of qualifying for Europe through their league position.
Otherwise, they will be relying on beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final to secure a place in next season’s Europa League. Fernandes added: “Obviously the job isn’t finished yet. We still have one game in the Premier League then the biggest game of the season, the FA Cup final.
“It has been a tough season. The table shows that and we are all aware of that. The fans have been amazing and behind us all season. We all appreciate what they have been doing for us. We want to do better and do differently and they [fans] deserve that.
“They have been amazing for us and we had to do something, we have been trying but results don’t show that. We have been working hard and everyone has been giving their best it is not enough and we have to do more. We still have two games to go and we have to finish in the best way.
“It doesn’t exist, a captain's performance, it is a team performance. I am no different from anyone just because I have the armband. I always try my best and we always do the best we can for the club – nobody hides that we play for a big club and we have to lift our standards every game.”
