is yet to be on the pitch for a single goal in games he has started this season. The 25-year-old will be desperate for his sorry streak to end next time out, but are sure to pose the sternest of tests when they rock up to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

United could hardly be coming up against a tougher opponent than an Arsenal side brimming with confidence, hunting down their first Premier League title for 20 years and peering over their shoulders at Manchester City.

Manager Erik ten Hag will at least have a fully fit Mount to call on after the start of his United career was plagued by injuries. The former Chelsea man was selected in midfield for the trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night, in which the Red Devils were thrashed 4-0.

That was merely the latest instalment in Mount's dreadful start to his new career chapter as, nine months since signing, he has not yet been on the pitch for a single United goal in games he has started.

Crystal Palace v Manchester United

The battering at Selhurst Park was only the fifth game Mount has started this campaign. In two others - Tottenham away and Palace at home - United went the whole game without scoring.

And in the two remaining games Mount has started - Wolves and Brentford at home - the midfielder had made his way off the pitch to be substituted by the time United got off the mark.

United forked out £60million to sign Mount from Chelsea last summer, with the fee raising eyebrows due to the fact he only had one year remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Despite his minimal contribution to this campaign, United boss Ten Hag is adamant that it will turn out to be money well spent. "I don't think [Chelsea] wanted to sell him," he said. "They wanted to keep him and they even offered him a new contract many times.

"But he wanted to make the step and we were, and we are, very pleased he is a Man United player because he has great abilities. I am sure he will contribute and he will become a big player for Man United."

Mount was an England regular between 2019 and 2022, but his slump in club form has dropped him out of contention to make Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad, with the final 26-man list to be submitted by June 8.
