Manchester United have reportedly entered surprise talks with Getafe regarding extending Mason Greenwood's loan into a second season. The Red Devils were thought to be pursuing a permanent deal or nothing for Greenwood this summer amid a need to raise funds through player sales.

According to The Athletic, the La Liga club want to extend Greenwood's stay but they are unlikely to consider signing him on a permanent basis.

The report adds that Getafe accept that Greenwood will likely pursue the opportunity to play Champions League football next term.
And it's claimed that United would prefer to sell their former No. 11 during a summer of significant change on and off the pitch at Old Trafford.
Recent reports have suggested that the M16 giants would consider reintegrating Greenwood into Ten Hag's squad if no suitable bids are tabled.
But The Athletic state that a loan will be viewed as an option in that case, opening the door for a potential return to Getafe once his current stint ends.

If United find a buyer for Greenwood, Getafe will receive 20 per cent of the fee after negotiating the clause into his deal last summer.
However, it's no surprise that the Madrid-based outfit are keen to keep hold of his services after an impressive return to football after 18 months in the shadows.
Greenwood has registered 10 goals and six assists in 32 appearances this season, earning a nomination for the La Liga Team of the Season.
He could stay in the Spanish top-flight if Getafe's negotiations with United reach a positive conclusion.
