and Getafe staff are reportedly at odds over whether the Red Devils have taken up an option to extend contract. The forward, who is on loan at Getafe, has a deal with United until 2025 but the side can trigger a 12-month extension.

Greenwood was sent on loan to the Spanish outfit last summer after United decided he should kickstart his career away from Old Trafford. The decision was prompted by a lengthy internal club investigation after the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Getafe are reportedly eager to sign Greenwood on a permanent deal as he has impressed during his time with the Madrid-based club. It is claimed that talks have taken place over a move, although there are several other clubs who are interested in signing the one-cap England international.

Greenwood’s loan deal will expire in the summer and he will theoretically return to United. However, minority shareholder has not made a decision over whether the 22-year-old will play for the club again.

Under normal circumstances, United would typically seek to renew a player’s contract when it enters the final 18 months. However, the Red Devils are well aware of the public scrutiny around this specific scenario.

According to The Athletic, Getafe are under the impression that United have taken up their option to extend Greenwood’s contract until 2026. It is claimed that officials who have been present in talks over a transfer have left with the understanding that the player will have two years remaining on his deal come the summer.

United reportedly dispute that claim. Clubs are under no obligation to publicly announce contract extensions but generally brief the media on when deals have been signed.

The report adds that United claim no decision has been taken on whether to extend the player’s contract. They insist that no talks on that matter have taken place with Greenwood, his family, or any other clubs.

United have until May 2025 to activate the extension, if they wish to do so. It means that there is little urgency to rush into a decision. INEOS chief Ratcliffe suggested several months ago that he wished to meet Greenwood before a decision is made on his future.

Greenwood has scored eight goals for Getafe this season, including five in La Liga. The Spanish side are reportedly hopeful of retaining the United academy graduate beyond this season, whether permanently or in another loan agreement.
