Manchester United’s reported plan to replace head coach Erik ten Hag with England boss Gareth Southgate has the backing of several members of the current dressing room. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to oversee sweeping changes at Old Trafford, including the manager’s job.
The Daily Star claim that Southgate is the number one option to replace Ten Hag at United by the new INEOS hierarchy. The ex-Middlesbrough player and coach will lead England at Euro 2024 but is yet to pledge his future to the FA beyond his current contract, which expires in December.
Ratcliffe is hoping to get an answer from Southgate sooner rather than later as he plans for a new era of United football under his regime. And the British billionaire has sought the opinions of some key figures involved with the club.
Southgate already has the backing of some of United’s current players. Incoming director of football Dan Ashworth, who worked with the England boss at the FA, has also given the green light to the proposed appointment.

Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave by his current club Newcastle amid interest from the Red Devils. The two clubs are yet to strike an agreement on a fee that would take the ex-Brighton chief to Old Trafford but it is expected that he will make the switch.
A dressing room ready to wave goodbye to Ten Hag may not come as a huge surprise to the Dutchman, who has not been afraid to clash with some high-profile stars. His war of words with Cristiano Ronaldo led to the United legend’s contract being torn up before he left for Saudi Arabia.
Ten Hag publicly banished Jadon Sancho after rowing with the £73million man and later sent him back out on loan to Borussia Dortmund. At the same time, Christian Eriksen has also admitted to being unhappy with his current situation after discussing the matter with his head coach. However, there is no suggestion that either Sancho or Eriksen have backed Southgate over Ten Hag specifically.

"I have previously stated that I am not satisfied with not playing, but it's not something that keeps me up at night,” Eriksen told Danish outlet Tipsbladet. "I have had a conversation with Erik about being unhappy with the situation and wanting to play as much as possible, but I am available and need to be available for the team, which I am and always will be.
“He said it was the team he had chosen, and Kobbie (Mainoo) is doing well and the rest of the midfield is also performing well, so there is competition for places, which is expected when playing for a top club. There is great competition within the team.
"Of course, you can be concerned in the long run because I want to play as much as possible. Naturally, you don't want to always sit on the bench. I don't have that approach to it, but it's not something that worries me right now.”
