out-of-the-box transfer links for midfielder Ross Barkley are beginning to make sense after comments on the former man resurfaced. New Red Devils minority shareholder Ratcliffe brought Barkley to side Nice on loan before he resurrected his career at Kenilworth Road.

The Sun claim that Ratcliffe and right-hand man are lining up a reunion with Barkley at Old Trafford. The 30-year-old could leave Luton for a low fee at the end of the season due to complex clauses in his contract if the Hatters are relegated.

Barkley has excelled in a deeper role alongside loanee Albert Sambi Lokonga and , reinforcements will be necessary in the middle of the pitch.

With Ratcliffe of the profit and sustainability rules, a bargain deal for Barkley may make sense as he enters the twilight of his career.

The INEOS chief already knows of Barkley’s quality from their time together at Nice, when Ratcliffe was furious that boss Lucien Favre preferred other options than Barkley and fellow Brit .

"It’s driving me mad," Ratcliffe wrote in the book Grit, Rigour & Humour: The Ineos Story. "I keep saying, ‘[David Brailsford] – tell him.’ And Dave says, ‘I can’t tell Favre who to pick – he’s the coach.’ So I say, ‘Well, I’m paying the wages.’ Seriously, I don’t want to interfere but there comes a point.

"There’s clearly a good reservoir of Premier League players we can tap into. Because Nice is a nice place to be, even on loan. But if you start to get a rumour in the UK that it’s fine but you don’t get picked, it’s quite difficult to scotch. Look at Ramsey. He’s the best footballer we’ve got. He should be playing every week because, with game time, you settle down and confidence grows.

“It’s similar with Ross Barkley. I saw him at Chelsea and he’s a really good footballer. If his mind’s in the right place and he’s in really good shape, you could play him twice a week because he’s built like a tank, really strong. You have to give a guy a chance to settle. And he gets one game every three or four. It’s ridiculous.”

It is clear that Ratcliffe has been a big fan of Barkley for some time and even though his Nice spell did not work out as planned, the new United chief appears to believe that the ex- international can repeat his Luton success at Old Trafford.
